If you’re fascinated by the mechanics of recording, mixing and reproducing sound, whether it be for films, music or video games, Solent University’s audio engineering degree programme will help you gain the fundamental technical expertise and practical knowledge sought after by employers in the industry.

Solent’s audio engineering degree combines a high level of technical expertise at systems level, operational skills in a variety of audio production environments, and a practical knowledge of the media industries’ working practices. 

Students study the underlying audio signal chain from acquisition to propagation, and across a wide variety of platforms. Flexible options within the degree programme allow students to focus their studies on particular areas of interest for their career path, including film sound, game audio, radio and television broadcasting, and systems integration.

The course is continually revised to keep up with industry developments and also draws on the experience and input of Solent graduates working at the cutting edge.

The course has a long history of successful graduate employment, and recent graduates have found positions at leading organisations, such as Bloomberg, Pinewood, Shepperton and Teddington Studios, Visions, SiS, F1, ITV and the BBC.

Students can choose flexible options during their degree to focus on specific areas of interest.

What does this course lead to?

Graduates from audio-related courses at Solent have gone on to positions such as studio engineer or acoustic design engineer at companies including Apple, Hackenbacker Audio Post Production, Abbey Road Studios, Dolby Laboratories, SSL Audio and Twickenham Film Studios.

Who is this course for?

This course will suit those who wish to learn about sound technology for the media or events industries.

The highly technical and practical course content will appeal to students wanting to gain the skills to pursue a career as a sound/audio engineer, broadcast engineer, or sound installation engineer.

Admission requirements

112 UCAS tariff points from A-levels or equivalent

  • A minimum of two A Levels including minimum Grade C in two relevant subjects excluding General Studies and Key Skills, a BTEC Extended Diploma at DMM or BTEC Diploma at D*D* or equivalent.
  • Alternative entry is available through theMedia Technology Foundation Year.
  • Applicants must attend an interview as part of the application process.

English language requirements

Applicants who do not have English as their first language will be required to demonstrate an approved level of proficiency in the use of the English language. The agreed minimum requirements for this course are:

  • IELTS minimum 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each individual component
  • TOEFL IBT minimum 80 with a minimum of 19 in each individual component
  • or equivalent.

Qualifications are checked before enrolment, and international students must bring their original certificates or certified copies when coming to study at the University.

The University also offers a pre-sessional English programme for international students who wish to improve their level of English before starting a degree course.

Tuition fees

The 2019/20 fees are not yet available. For guidance, the 2018/19 fees were:
UK, EU and Channel Island full-time fees:£9,250 per year
International full-time fees: £12,500 per year
