Computational Biology and Bioinformatics (M.Sc)

Biology, biotechnology and biosciences have been rapidly developing since 2000. To handle the data produced, computer technology is required due to the excessive amount of data. Most of the recent techniques used in DNA, RNA and protein based research is supported by bioinformatics and computer science. The computer science offers a new era for the biological sciences. For example the building block of the cell, proteins are modeled in 3D using computer; this enables the rapid and efficient identification of molecular interactions and signal transduction pathways. Similarly, mutations in the genetic sequence can be detected quite fast using the computer technology. Since the recent advancements in computational biology decreased the cost and accelerated the research processes including the drug development, the in silico studies are highly demanded in industry. These studies will help therapeutic methods, which will ultimately be used for treatment and increase the quality of life.

The department of Computational Biology and Bioinformatics offers an education comprising programming (object oriented), bioinformatics & genomics, molecular modeling applications and cell biology & genetics.

Graduates of this program will be able to use the latest computer technology in order to solve problems about biological systems, such as designing a drug and testing a drug candidate’s interactions in computer environment. The bioinformatics graduates will be highly desired employees in health industry, especially by pharmaceutical companies. This industry receives high amount of investments in North America, Central Europe and East Asia. As one the most promising sciences of 21st century, bioinformatics is waiting for more and more scientists.

Admission requirements

The applicants of the program are required to hold a B.S. degree and to have scored at least 55 in the quantitative section of Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES) and 65 in the Interuniversity Council Language Examination (ÜDS or YDS). ALES score requirement is not applicable to international students. International language examination (TOEFL, etc.) scores are acceptable for all applicants according to the equivalencies as imposed by the regulations of the Higher Education Council. The applicants fulfilling these requirements are further interviewed

  • Masters with thesis (per year): $12,000
  • Masters non-thesis (full program): $12,000


Upon successful completion of the program, students will be awarded with Master of Science in Computational Biology and Bioinformatics (The Qualifications Frameworks in the European Higher Education Area (QF-EHEA): Level 2, European Qualifications Framework (EQF): Level 7).

Program outcomes

  1. To be able recognize structure of organic molecules, to be able to model and visualize by graphics.
  2. The ability to find the interaction between structures and enzyme kinetics of the organic molecules, and to use this interaction for drug design and to assign drug activity.
  3. The ability to do molecular modeling and dynamic biological system simulation using basic statistics, physics, bioinformatics and computational biology methods, and/or programming languages.
  4. To understand and the ability to conceptualize cell biology, genetic structure, heredity, genome, evolutionary mechanisms and systems biology.
  5. To be able to investigate the scientific problems in computational biology and bioinformatics; the ability to design experiment, to conduct experiment, to collect data, to analyze data, to get the results and to interpret, independently, or as part of a group.
  6. To be able to follow the developments in computational biology and bioinformatics with a critical point of view; the habit of monitor progress and awareness of life-long education.
  7. The awareness and responsibility in professional, environmental and quality issues.
  8. To ability to communicate on scientific topics, verbal and written, in English.

Continuing studies

Upon successful completion of the graduate program, candidates can apply to doctoral programs.
