About this program

The Master of Science (Global Subsea Engineering) course offers a unique opportunity for postgraduate students with a high academic achievement to engage and learn in an internationally collaborative environment centred around two major oil and gas hubs: Aberdeen, Scotland and Perth, Western Australia.

Students undertaking this joint masters course have the opportunity to complete four units at both institutions (i.e. Curtin then Aberdeen) followed by the completion of a jointly supervised project thesis. Thesis topics will be jointly developed by both institutions, leveraging the strong industry links at both oil and gas hubs. The eight taught units and thesis are conducted over three study periods (nominally 14 months in total). At the successful completion of the course students will be awarded a degree recognising their study at both institutions.

Why study the Master of Science (Global Subsea Engineering)?

This unique global course offers students, with a 2nd class upper Bachelor of Engineering honours degree or higher, a compressed MSc pathway to a subsea engineering career in the oil & gas industry either in Australia or the UK.

Alternative study location

It is also possible to begin this program with the University of Aberdeen, commending Semester 1 and the Project module in Aberdeen and Semester 2 in Perth. Find out more.

Program content

  • apply subsea engineering knowledge to field developments at a recognised international level; extend the boundaries through research to improve the safety, environmental and economic sustainability for offshore operations
  • critically analyse a subsea engineering problem and apply sound engineering principles to determine alternative solutions; utilise intellectual questioning independent and creative thinking to select optimal solutions
  • identify, research and inquire into discipline problems; source and evaluate data using appropriate technologies; synthesise and analyse data with a dispassionate perspective
  • communicate effectively in a variety of contexts; develop the capacity to use informed argument and reasoning and utilise a wide range of oral and written communication styles
  • implement, evaluate and adapt appropriate technologies for specific subsea contexts; oversee continual design and operational improvement of subsea systems
  • appreciate the need for, and develop, a lifelong learning skills strategy; be open to furthering personal development and self-reflection beyond graduation
  • recognise the global nature of the oil and gas industry and apply global standard practices and skills for acceptable engineering outcomes regardless of discipline or geographical location
