South Shields Marine School (part of South Tyneside College) is able to offer a B.Eng. (Hons) degree in Marine Engineering, validated by the University of Sunderland. This programme is a top-up degree course that has been designed to enable certificated marine engineers to achieve the academic standard of a degree qualification.
This should enable you to market your practical skills to a wider market, such as
· Government surveyors
· Classification Society surveyors
· Technical superintendency
· Marine engineering consultant
Entry qualifications
The entry qualifications will either be:
Higher National Diploma in Marine Engineering (recognised by the UK MNTB) with the majority of Units passed with a score of 70% or higher and with a very limited number of resits required.
(Depending on the exact content of your HND and the year it was gained it may be a requirement that you study our advanced mathematics distance learning course (mainly calculus) and take the associated assessment. Passing this assessment would be a condition of acceptance onto the course)
Or
Foundation Degree in Marine Engineering from South Shields Marine School or from any other UK institution.
Or
Class One Certificate of Competency recognised by the UK MCA
Other qualifications will be considered on an individual basis.
Students who do not have English as their first language should have a score of 5.5 on all four parts of the IELTS.

The BEng course in Marine Engineering is offered in partnership between South Tyneside College and the University of Sunderland. All lectures, seminars and tutorials will be delivered at South Shields Marine School by the college staff.
This course has been designed as a flexible modular course which allows both the completion of the course within the minimum time scale shown below, or the option of completing one semester per year, where the maximum period for completion is limited to three year.

Aims and Philosophy
General Objectives
The four general objectives against which student's achievements are measured are:
a) To instil an appreciation and understanding of the concepts of more advanced marine engineering.
b) To develop the skills necessary to select and apply appropriate engineering concepts, experience and knowledge.
c) To cultivate a confident, imaginative and responsible attitude towards engineering problems in their totality.
d) To equip graduates with lifetime learning and transferable skills.
This degree course has a strong applied element which exposes its students to a wide variety of practical marine engineering problems through analysis and experimentation.
Course Structure
As with all other degrees in the University the BEng (Hons) course is unitised, i.e. each of the courses consists of a combination of units which give a coherent academic programme. This course can only be studied in full time mode, six unit equivalents are

To obtain a BEng it is a requirement that all 120 credits are successfully completed.
