About this program

Awarded by: Newcastle College Group

.Biotechnology is an exciting and varied area of science. Our demands for new medicines and technology means that science has to constantly evolve to meet those needs. This course was developed as a result of an increasing demand from local pharmaceutical and biotechnology related companies and this continues to be an area of increased growth. The aim of the course is to consolidate your aptitude for biotechnology and its application in different contexts, particularly within industry and research, whilst expanding your knowledge in other areas of science. The course will help you to develop the specialist knowledge and key skills required to work in the fields of bioscience and biotechnology. You will expand your knowledge of cell biology, clinical and diagnostic enzymology and genetic modification and carry out practical work, including gel electrophoresis and polymerase chain reactions (PCR). You will also have the opportunity to develop your communication skills through giving presentations and writing reports. As part of our work-ready guarantee you will have the opportunity to gain student membership of the Royal Society of Biology and during the course you will meet the criteria that will enable you to achieve Registered Scientist status which is awarded by the Royal Society of Biology. You will also have the opportunity to obtain qualifications in the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH), manual handling, working at heights and/or MS Office. You could seek employment in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industries or in a medical or agricultural research establishment as technicians or production. You will be equipped with the skills necessary for a variety of roles from laboratory-based research scientist to a science journalist. You may choose to go on to further study via a PGCE or Masters qualification
