About this program
All design degree students enrol in honours. Towards the end of third year, you decide whether you want to stick with the honours route, where your 4th year will be strongly research-led. The non-honours path is less research-focused and gives you room for more electives in 4th year.
As a Massey design student, you will spend most of your time making and thinking in studios, workshops and media labs, whatever your major. There are many opportunities to explore other design fields through electives and cross-disciplinary collaboration is encouraged. There is also a focus on real world problem-solving and students in their 4th year have the opportunity to engage with live briefs and external clients.
Your world in 3D
Industrial design is a great choice if you enjoy designing, inventing and making three-dimensional things. From smart phones and sport shoes to movie sets and healthcare products, industrial design has transformed our lives - and Massey grads are at the forefront.
What is it Like?
Industrial Design is concerned with designing better and innovative products used in daily life, and it includes practical design and study of the manufacture and use of products, equipment, and furniture.
The Industrial Design major encourages innovative thinking and creative application of new technologies to meet social, cultural, economic, and environmental needs of contemporary and future societies. You'll learn to arrive at design solutions and show them by using many materials and techniques to create models and prototypes with a professional level of finish. Your learning is studio-project based and you'll research and design a diverse range of items from tools to kitchenware, jeweler to sporting goods, furniture to agricultural equipment. You'll learn how effective use of good design in production and marketing is an essential element in the achievement of business success.
Careers
Graduates are well prepared for professional careers in a variety of fields, such as product design consultancies, design departments in manufacturing industries, architectural practices, social services departments, and industrial policy development in private and public corporations.
Graduates typically start their careers employed as design assistants or junior designers. They then progress to senior or management positions in private practices or in manufacturing and construction industries. Some have become directors of successful export-orientated manufacturing businesses, or design consultants in both New Zealand and overseas. Graduates may also continue to postgraduate studies and further develop their design abilities, knowledge and research interests, and skills.
Many of our students have won prestigious national and international design competitions, such as the Dyson, Electrolux, Sony, LG and Red Dot awards. Graduates are working in consumer product companies such as Fisher and Paykel, Apple, Nike and Philips and creative industries such as Weta Workshop.
