Latvian Maritime Academy
Latvian Maritime Academy (LMA) is the first and only institute in Latvia to provide higher maritime vocational education and training for the maritime industry on a regular basis. The roots of maritime education in Latvia may be traced back more than 200 years. The first Maritime School in Riga was founded in 1789.
Latvian Maritime Academy enrolled the first students as part of the Kaliningrad Institute of Fishing Industries on 1 October 1989 therefore this year is considered the foundation year of LMA. On 25 July 1990, LMA became one of the faculties of Riga Technical University, but since January 1993 LMA is a fully independent educational establishment.
LMA aim is to provide students with a balance of academic education, professional training and practical skills in order to respond to a wide spectrum of needs in the maritime industry. LMA graduates are well-qualified mariners in the technical areas of navigation, marine engineering, marine electrical automation, and port and shipping management. LMA trains officers for the Latvian Navy.
To ensure a level of excellence-relevant vocational maritime education, LMA management sustains a quality management system consistent with the ISO 9001 model. LMA offers four professional Bachelor degree study programmes and one professional Master degree study programme. All study programmes are accredited by the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Latvia.
