Master of Civil Engineering

The master's degree in civil engineering is aimed at developing analytical and problem-solving skills and a solid scientific-technical knowledge, embedded in a general university background.

As a Master of Civil Engineering, you will be trained to take a leading role in the construction sector. You will actively contribute to the development, quality and sustainability of our built environment. With ever-increasing demands on all of these aspects, new challenges arise for civil engineers. The field of work covers a broad spectrum, from construction materials over buildings and infrastructure to the global environment. Admission requirements

Language requirements:

  • Applicants enrolling for the first time at KU Leuven prove their English language proficiency by means of an IELTS, TOEFL or Cambridge English Exam (CAE).
  • The minimum score required for IELTS is 7 (with no subscore under 6.5).
  • For the TOEFL internet-based test the minimum score is 94 (with no subscore under 22).
  • The minimum score required for the Cambridge English Exam (CAE) is 185 (with no subscore under 176).
  • Applicants with a university degree or high school degree earned in Australia, English-speaking Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom or the USA are exempted from this requirement: the degree and transcripts suffice, provided they confirm that the entire study was completed in English.

Program content

The program offers the choice between two options founded upon a common core, both resulting in a strong own profile that corresponds with specific needs in the industry. The common core of the Master in Civil Engineering provides a solid foundation for the specialization in either of the two options, and also covers a number of generic aspects that are important in the design, management and execution of construction projects.

The focus of the two options is:

  • The Structural Engineering option prepares you for the structural design of buildings and infrastructure (roads, bridges, tunnels, etc.), ensuring that all loads can be handled in a safe and efficient way.
  • The Hydraulic Engineering option prepares you for water management (sewerage, water distribution, ...) and water infrastructure (locks, coastal protection, ...), taking into account aspects of the environment and climate change.

Career paths

Most civil engineers are employed by contractors, engineering consultants, infrastructure managers, government or research institutions. Civil engineers take care of the design, implementation and management of infrastructure and buildings.

Generally, engineers start in a more technically oriented position and advance from there into project and business management. Because of their analytical thinking and management skills, engineers are often in demand in other sectors as well, such as financial and insurance companies or management consultants.
