Financial Engineering (M.Sc)

As a result of recent technological developments, there has been an increasing demand for professionals in finance with an engineering background. The Master’s Program in Financial Engineering is an interdisciplinary program based on the theory of finance, on the application of mathematical sciences to finance and on the use of information technologies in finance.

The graduates of the program can work in the banking sector, in financial management, in risk analysis, and as quantitative analysts in finance departments. They are expected to:

  • Efficiently use tools and techniques to evaluate financial markets, determine investment strategies, and make risk assessment in insurance and investment funds.
  • Work on the design, implementation, and marketing of new financial tools.
  • Construct mathematical models and solve these with efficient computational techniques.

The compulsory courses of the program are basic courses in financial mathematics and applied technical analysis with an emphasis on algorithmic trading. The laboratory work aims to give hands-on training in the programming of financial mathematics and on the use of data terminals for stock markets. The non-thesis M.Sc. program consists of 36 credits and a non-credit Graduation Project, while the M.Sc. program with thesis consists of 27 credits and the non-credit Seminar and M.Sc. Thesis.

The languages of instruction are English and Turkish.

Admission requirements

The applicants of the program are required to hold a B.S. degree and to have scored at least 55 in the quantitative section of Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES). The ALES score requirement is not applicable to the non-thesis option and to international students.

Tuition fees

Upon successful completion of the program, students will be awarded with Master of Science in Financial Engineering (The Qualifications Frameworks in the European Higher Education Area (QF-EHEA): Level 2, European Qualifications Framework (EQF): Level 7).

Program outcomes

  1. Knowledge on theoretical foundations of standard instruments used in financial engineering.
  2. Ability to use current algorithms and financial software.
  3. Ability to develop algorithms and basic programming skills for technical analysis, portfolio and risk management.
  4. Ability to use stock market data, determine parameters and that influence these, access and interpret relevant data.
  5. Ability to design alternative financial products.
  6. Basic knowledge on financial risks and thier management.
  7. Ability to work in groups, take part of a distant tean and work in projects in a limited timeframe.
  8. Ability to report and present technical work.
  9. Knowledge about the social, legal and ethical aspects of financial applications.
  10. Awareness of responsible and ethical practices.

Continuing studies

Upon successful completion of the graduate program (with thesis), candidates can apply to doctoral programs.

Career opportunities

The graduates are employed in financial institution, banks and in finance departments as traders, financial analysts or business analysts.
