In December 2015, 195 countries adopted the first-ever universal, global climate deal to limit the rise in global temperatures to 2°C with the Paris Agreement at the 21st Conference of the Parties (COP21). With the agreement these countries also aim of limiting the increase to 1.5°C. Keeping it to this number will significantly reduce the risk of damaging climate change for both natural ecosystems and human populations. The future of energy production, and technology development for renewable energy generation capacities is at the heart of this effort.
Due to this agreement, the need for management of environmental resources and to study the interactions between the geophysical environment, energy production and energy consumption will grow in importance. To meet this need, research teams, corporations, research, and public bodies will require experts that possess a combination of technical knowledge, a full understanding of the interactions between energy production and the environment and a strong entrepreneurial streak that will help them carry projects forward in this new landscape.
This is exactly the kind of rich, multidisciplinary training that École Polytechnique is known for worldwide. the Energy Environment: Science Technology and Management (STEEM) Graduate Degree presents energy and the environment as two equal parts that will determine the future of our climate. In this manner, the program provides students with a sophisticated understanding of energy in the 21st century. The STEEM program is based upon a foundation of training in engineering and applied sciences. Students are given the tools that they need to understand climate change from a socioeconomic context and the evolution of mankind's relationship with energy.
Applicants must hold or expect to hold an undergraduate degree in Engineering Science, Mechanical Engineering or Physics prior to the beginning of the program.
