About this program
Master of Science Materials Science & Engineering
All objects around us are constructed from materials. But did you know that materials can also be constructed? By manipulating the microstructure - the ‘DNA’ – of materials you can actually design a mix of material properties tailored to a specific application or production process.
Materials Science and Engineering is an interdisciplinary field, based on knowledge of physical, chemical and engineering sciences. This knowledge is used to design materials that suit particular applications, to meet specific functions and quality requirements. This demands insight into the physics that affect material properties.
One must be able to predict what consequences the atomic structure and also the microstructure (grains, phases) will have on the final properties. The material properties, which are also largely affected by the production process involved, determine whether a (newly designed) material is suited for a specific application.
This education brings a combination of knowledge and skills in different fields of science and engineering in order to design and apply materials in a skillful manner.
