Chemistry and Technology of Foodstuffs

SPECIFIC ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Master degree in chemical engineering, food chemistry or other chemical specializations earned at university faculties, ICT Prague or agricultural universities.

KEY LEARNING OUTCOMES

The PhD study and study related research are focused on the acquisition and development of theoretical knowledge and experimental skills in the areas of food chemistry and engineering processes of food production, applied analytical and physical chemistry, microbiology, biochemistry and molecular biotechnology. The study is designed in line with the development of food science and food technologies and other basic and applied specializations . The main attention is be focused on manufacturing, processing, storage, quality control and food safety. Due to the rapid development of molecular biology techniques, adequate attention is be paid to the use of this discipline in the development of new food technologies. Scientific knowledge focuses on food quality and safety, production of functional foods and the development of modern molecular- biological diagnostic methods.

FINAL STATE EXAMINATION

The state doctoral examination proves a deep theoretical knowledge in the field of the dissertation thesis and the field of study, including methodological foundations of scientific work. Its content is based mainly on the topic of the doctoral program and individual study plan of the doctoral student.
The part of the doctoral examination consists of the discussion on the relationship with the dissertation topic presented by the doctoral student. . This discussion contains particularly a critical evaluation of the findings in the field of the dissertation topic, expected goals of the dissertation thesis and the characteristics of the selected research methods.

COURSE OF STUDY

During the doctoral program the student in accordance with the individual plan of the exam attends lectures, courses, seminars, participates in domestic and foreign internships, educational activities of the training department and works on his/her dissertation. During the course of study the doctoral student is obliged to participate in a scientific conference organized by FCH BUT, where he /she will deliver a presentation in English. Several times a year the student participates in workshops that are organized by the Expert Board of the relevant doctoral program, in at least one international scientific symposium in the Czech Republic, eventually. abroad and is required to publish at least one article in an international journal with IF. The student becomes the graduate of the doctoral studies in the relevant specialization by successful passing the state doctoral examination and by defending the dissertation. He/she earns the degree "Doctor", abbreviated to "Ph.D."

OCCUPATIONAL PROFILES OF GRADUATES WITH EXAMPLES

Graduates of the doctoral program will gain theoretical knowledge and practical experimental skills and experience necessary for independent creative solutions of the problems in a wide and complex area of food chemistry. The program is oriented both on the chemical basis of food and biotechnological production with regard to security and development of advanced technologies, and quality and safety control of produced food. The graduates find employment in university and non-university research, R & D sector of public and private companies and institutions, in the Czech Republic and the EU (e.g. European Food Safety Authority, the Office for Health and Consumer Protection, European Commission) and national and multinational plants of agro-food complex.. The graduate profile also offers employment in state control institutions and business organizations. The graduate profile is designed to be comparable with similar studies at domestic and foreign universities and with the demands of the European Research Area.

Admission requirements

Master degree in chemical engineering, food chemistry or other chemical specializations earned at university faculties, ICT Prague or agricultural universities.

The basic prerequisites for the admission are:

  • interest and aptitude for scientific work,
  • knowledge of the English language,
  • a very good study record achieved in the Master's program (grade point average of all passed examinations usually does not exceed 2.0),
  • CV,
  • letter of motivation,
  • authenticated certificates of the pending or completed study,
  • an authenticated certificate of the highest-level English exam passed.
