Jewellery + Metals
Jewellery + Metals majors explore traditional and contemporary techniques, materials, and concerns as they develop their own studio practice. A dedicated program technician supports students and faculty in this well-equipped program.In second year, students learn small-scale metals skills and and hone their design, drawing and abilities. Metalsmithing is introduced, large-scale soldering, raising, chasing, and vessels. Third-year students concentrate on building skills using samples and work that develops proficiency in gemstone setting, casting, chasing, tool making, molding, anodizing, and multiple techniques for one-of-a-kind and production work. In the final year, research is emphasized. Students develop individual studio practices which can be wide ranging. They present a major paper or undertake real-world project such as a business plans, websites, or books. Project management, teamwork, and volunteer engagement are emphasized. Transferable skills are discussed, problem solving and creative thinking fostered. Students exhibit their work throughout their studies, and participate in the creative community.
